TooShy vs Replika

Replika was one of the first mainstream AI companion apps, launching in 2017 and growing to over 30 million registered users. It pioneered the concept of an AI friend that learns from you over time, with features like mood tracking, journaling, and AR avatar customization. For many users, Replika was their first experience with AI companionship.

The platform faced major controversy in early 2023 when it abruptly removed romantic and NSFW features, leaving paying users who had built deep emotional connections feeling betrayed. While some romantic capabilities were partially restored later, the trust was damaged. replika.com publishes no price at all; the App Store listing prices subscriptions at $7.99 and $14.99 a month, $49.99 and $69.99 a year, with Replika Platinum at $89.99 — and basic romantic interactions sit behind that paywall.

Replika's biggest limitation is its isolation. It exists only within its own app — you can't chat with your AI companion in WhatsApp or Telegram, and Replika never initiates conversations. You must always remember to open the app. With only one companion available (no character variety) and no contextual multimedia like voice messages or video circles, the experience feels static compared to modern alternatives.
