Best AI Roleplay Chat Apps, Ranked

SpicyChat holds the biggest catalogue anyone here publishes a number for: its own roleplay page says "over 1 million chatbots," made by users. If browsing an enormous library and building your own bot is what you want, we are the wrong product — TooShy runs a small fixed cast, has no builder, and takes no uploaded cards. What we do instead is put one of them into WhatsApp or Telegram, where she opens the conversation herself and carries one thread forward for weeks. On catalogue alone we finish last of everyone here. On the wider question this page ranks — how easily a roleplay starts and how well it survives a week — we land fifth of the six that could be checked.
Almost everything that draws a crowd in this category does it the same way: a wall of user-written characters, a card editor, a search box over the catalogue. The eight below differ in how many characters they hold, who wrote them, how much of a scene you may steer, what it takes to get the first message on screen, and whether the thread is still there a week later. Several would not open for us at all, and where that happened we say so rather than borrow a figure from elsewhere.
What each one actually is
SpicyChat is a catalogue plus an editor. Its own page for free roleplay chat states "1 Million+ NSFW Characters," invites you to "Design your own AI from scratch," and advertises unlimited messages with "no moderation bots." Its 2025 year-in-review adds figures the company published about itself: the most-used model that year was Qwen Rapid AOL NSFW v11.1, over 100 million chatbots were added to favourites, and 2.62 million images were generated inside conversations.
Janitor AI is the name that comes up most often beside it — a catalogue of user-written character cards you point at a language model. We could not confirm a single figure from janitorai.com: the domain answers a plain fetch with an "Access Restricted" page, so its catalogue count, its daily free-message cap and its model list are not quotable from the source. Third-party write-ups throw around numbers in the millions; we will not repeat a count the company does not publish where it can be read.
Character.AI is the oldest catalogue of the group and the broadest — its about page calls the product "interactive entertainment," and its characters are written by users, not staff. The product data on its own subscription page lists c.ai+ at $94.99 a year. In a post dated September 3, 2026 the company said it removed open-ended chat with Characters for users under 18 and built its own age-estimation model, so what a scene may become depends on which side of that check you land.
Chub AI is a library of character cards meant to be pulled out and run against a back end of your choosing. Fetching chub.ai returned "This service is not available in your country," so nothing about its size, its prices or its rules can be quoted from the source here. CrushOn sat behind a Cloudflare challenge on every address we tried, including its sitemap. Both are genuine, widely used products; neither could be read, and both are marked unverified in the cards below.
DreamGen sells worlds rather than a bot count: you write a world and its cast, steer the plot, and play prepared scenarios like "World of Eldoria" or "Tavern at World's End." Its published plans are $6.26, $15.48 and $33.81 a month under a launch discount. Candy AI's homepage mentions "over 100 different characters to choose from" plus a builder for your own. Nomi has no shared catalogue at all — you write a backstory or let the personality settle as you talk, and several Nomis can share one group chat.
The ranking, and what it weighs
The order weighs five things, not one: how many characters you can reach, whether you can write your own, whether several can share a scene, what it takes to get started at all, and whether the story is still there when you come back. SpicyChat leads because it is strong on the first two and asks only for a browser. Character.AI follows on the oldest and broadest catalogue, with memory sold as a feature. Nomi is third: no catalogue, but a builder, group chats and proactive messages inside its own app. Candy AI is fourth on a hundred-odd ready characters plus a builder — it beats us on catalogue, on authoring and on nothing being worse for group scenes, so it sits above us. We are fifth: last of everyone on catalogue and authoring, and carried entirely by the last two criteria, because the chat opens in WhatsApp or Telegram with nothing to install and the character writes first. DreamGen is sixth because a world has to be written before a scene can start. Janitor AI and Chub AI are not ranked: neither would open for us, and we will not rank a product on someone else's description of it.
Ranked on how easily a roleplay starts and keeps going: catalogue breadth, who writes the character, group scenes, what it takes to begin, and whether the thread survives a week. Products that blocked our request are not ranked at all.

Last place on catalogue size is the honest result of that one measure, and it says nothing about what happens after you pick a character. That part we can show with our own numbers.
What our own conversations add up to
These are aggregates from our production database over the 30 days ending September 20, 2026 — counts, never conversation text, and nothing that identifies a person. 44,120 messages went through it, and 460 people were on the human side of them. An active conversation averaged 64 messages; the longest single one reached 899. Our side took an average of 17 seconds to answer, and 1.1% of everything sent was something other than text.
Sixty-four messages is a scene that keeps going; 899 is a story someone has been adding to for weeks. That is the argument we have: the character sits in the messaging app you already keep open, writes first instead of waiting to be visited, and remembers earlier scenes when she does. Nomi comes nearest — it shipped proactive messages in September 2026 with four frequency settings — but it still acts inside its own app.
Where the big catalogues beat us
Scale is the first thing, and it is not close. A published claim of more than a million characters against our fixed handful buys something real: variety of voice, setting and genre, and the freedom to drop a character you have gone cold on and find another in a minute. Adding one on our side takes us weeks rather than a stranger ten minutes with a form.
Authorship is the second. On SpicyChat, Character.AI and Chub AI the author is a user, so the scenario, the opening scene, the speech quirks and the lore are all editable by anyone who wants them different, and Candy AI and Nomi let you build a companion from scratch. Group scenes are a third: Nomi puts several companions in one chat, DreamGen a whole cast in one story. We have none of the three.
Our honest limits
A cast this size is a small shelf, and it fits worst exactly the people who came for a catalogue. There is no way to change how one of ours speaks, to hand her a scenario you wrote, or to put two of them in a room together, and the roster only moves when we add to it. Because the conversation lives in a messenger, the browse-and-sample habit the catalogues are built around barely exists here — you pick once and you talk.
Who each one fits
If the appeal is the library — strangers' characters, fan favourites, odd niches, a new one every evening — take SpicyChat first, then Character.AI or Janitor AI, accepting the rules each sets on what a scene can contain. If you would rather write the world than browse it, DreamGen is built for that. If you want one companion you shaped yourself plus group scenes with the others you made, Nomi fits closest; Candy AI covers the middle. And if the thing stopping you is the setup — another app, another login, another tab to remember — that is the gap we sit in.
We are for the narrower case: one character out of a short list, in WhatsApp or Telegram, who texts first and picks a story back up on day nine where it stopped on day eight. Premium is $9.99 a month, Ultra is $19, and the Telegram trial costs nothing. If a catalogue is what you came for, the products above will serve you better, and we would rather say that plainly than dress a short roster up as a feature.
How we checked the facts
Every competitor figure was read off a public page on the company's own domain on September 20, 2026, at the addresses below: SpicyChat's catalogue claim and 2025 numbers, Character.AI's $94.99 annual price and its under-18 change, DreamGen's plan prices, Candy AI's character count, Nomi's group chat and proactive messages. Janitor AI, Chub AI and CrushOn blocked the request, so nothing is quoted from them and their cards say unverified. Our figures are production aggregates for the window stated above.
