Character.AI Alternatives: What You Get Instead

What Character.AI is now

The company is Character Technologies Inc., trading as Character.AI, registered in Delaware and, by its own about page, "headquartered in Silicon Valley with offices in Seattle and New York." That page states the purpose in a single line: Character.AI "empowers people to connect, learn, and tell stories through interactive entertainment." The operative word there is entertainment, and the rest of the page keeps it up — "storytelling, gaming, social connection, and creative expression converge," "be a part of an expansive community," "connect with creators or find your own fans." The scale claims sit on the same page: "Millions of people visit Character.AI every month" and "millions of Characters to discover, unlimited conversations to explore." Neither figure is broken out, and neither can be audited from outside.

Apple's listing agrees about the category. Character Technologies, Inc. files the iOS app under Entertainment, rated 18+, weighing 280.4 MB, in "English and 27 more" languages, holding 4.3 out of 5 across 559K ratings. The content descriptors on that listing run long — cartoon or fantasy violence, profanity, mature or suggestive themes, horror, alcohol and drug references, sexual content or nudity, weapons — and two of them describe the business rather than the fiction: "Advertising" and "User-Generated Content." On Google Play, the data-safety card for the same app lists email address, crash logs, diagnostics, app interactions, in-app search history and device IDs as collected, and states that "this app doesn't share user data with other companies or organizations." The main Play listing itself would not return readable text to us, so its download count and star average are not quoted anywhere here.

The conversation that got taken away, and from whom

The largest change to the product is in neither store. Character.AI's own blog, on 3 September 2026, refers back to it as settled history: "Last year, we removed open-ended chat with Characters for users under 18," a call the company describes as one of the most significant safety decisions it has ever made. Enforcing it meant building the checking in-house — "we developed our own age assurance technology and an in-house age estimation model" — and replacing free-form conversation for teenagers with other formats: "c.ai Series, Feed, Comics, and more." A parent or guardian whose email address is attached to a teenager's account now gets "visibility into the user's activity." An earlier post, dated 22 October 2024, lists the groundwork: a revised disclaimer on every chat reminding people the AI is not a real person, a notification once a session passes an hour, a pop-up resource triggered by certain phrases about self-harm, and "industry-standard and custom blocklists that are regularly updated" used to pull down user-made characters. A company that has already withdrawn its central interaction from one group of users is a company that can withdraw it again, and that is worth weighing before you commit another year.

What c.ai+ costs, and what Charms cost on top

Money, as published. The c.ai+ page prices twelve months at $94.99 against $119.88 paid month by month — "save 21%" — and puts the two columns beside each other: ads go from "Full" to "None," memory from "Basic" to "Best," pins from 15 to 30, the Lorebook from "Basic" to "Adv.," and "Slow mode: Yes" on the free column becomes "None" on the paid one. Apple's listing fills in what that page leaves out — a $9.99 monthly c.ai+, a cheaper Character.AI Lite at $2.49 and $4.99, and six Charms packs running from $0.99 to $49.99. Charms are a second currency stacked on whichever subscription you hold, and c.ai+ tops up the balance by "+20%," which makes the subscription the floor of a heavy month rather than its ceiling.

How the four below are ordered

One question sets the order of the four, and it is deliberately a small one: how little must you install, and how much of the cost can you read before handing over a card? That is the part anyone can verify from the outside without an account. It is emphatically not the axis Character.AI would win — on catalogue, creation tools and community it wins outright, and that gets its own section below. Nothing here is scored on model quality or on how many Characters exist, because neither is measurable from a page you can only read.

We are first on that narrow question and on nothing else. TooShy arrives through WhatsApp and Telegram — not a companion app wearing a chat interface, the actual messengers your friends already sit in — so there is nothing to install, no feed to scroll and no gallery to browse. Premium runs $9.99 a month, Ultra $19, both printed before signup, with no second currency to top up and nothing metered per photo; the free tier includes ten photos a week. There is no character editor of any kind: every character is written in-house, and no user-made bots exist to search through. For anyone whose Character.AI habit is built on discovering a stranger's Character at two in the morning, that is plainly the worse product, and no other column makes up for it.

Nomi is second, and it is the nearest thing here to Character.AI's creation half without Character.AI's library. Its homepage sells remembering as the product — "An AI Companion with Memory and a Soul," with "short, medium, and long term memory" named outright and the claim that Nomis "pick up on and remember your preferences, habits, tendencies, and the little details." You write the character: "Write a custom backstory, share your preferences, and more to create your perfect partner. Or just start chatting and let your Nomi develop their personality naturally." Several of them can share one thread — "Put them all in a group chat and watch the adventure… or fireworks unfold." Getting in costs nothing, "free (no credit card required) to start chatting," and the homepage names a subscription without ever printing what it costs. That last omission is why it sits behind us on the readable-price half of the question and ahead of everything else on the rest.

PolyBuzz is third and plays the volume game. Its homepage claims "over 20 million characters" and offers "Free, Private, and Unrestricted AI character chats," with a Create Character flow and published migration guides for bringing characters in from somewhere else — the closest thing on this list to an exit route for a library you have already built. It runs in a browser. The money works much the way it does on Character.AI: free to chat, a membership for more, and coins you buy on top, with the coin prices absent from the page.

Talkie is fourth because it tells you the least before you commit. Its homepage leads with "Talkie | Free AI Character Chat," carries a Create button in the navigation and a Download App link, and prints engagement counts next to individual characters — 8.9K on one, 615.1K on another — which is a community figure shown where most products show nothing at all. The paid tier surfaces only as an "Unlock with Talkie+" prompt beside a 50% discount promotion, with no price attached. It is a real product with a real following, and it ranks last here because nearly everything you would want settled before paying sits behind the install.

Our own numbers, thirty days

These are production aggregates for the 30 days ending 1 September 2026 — counts and percentages only, no conversation text, nothing that identifies anybody. 44,120 messages moved through WhatsApp and Telegram in that window, spread across 1,009 conversations held by 460 people, with 425 new registrations alongside them. The average conversation ran 64 messages; the longest reached 899. Replies averaged 17 seconds. 9.0% of messages went out without anyone prompting them — she started the exchange. Of the 46,087 messages people sent in the same window, 7.37% touched on photos, 4.34% on mature content and 0.36% on remembering things.

What Character.AI does better than we do

Two things aren't close. The first is the library and the machinery that built it: millions of Characters written by other people, plus a Lorebook, pins and a creation flow that somebody with an idea can use on a Tuesday afternoon. We have none of it — no editor, no user-made bots, nothing to search. The second is everything built around that library. Character.AI runs a Feed, Comics and c.ai Series, publishes Creator Spotlights on its own blog, and ships on iOS in 28 languages carrying a 4.3 average from 559K ratings; there is simply nowhere in a WhatsApp thread to put a feed. A third, smaller one deserves saying too: over there the whole product is free. The free column is the real thing with ads and a queue, not a trial with a clock on it.

Where we fall short

Begin with our own numbers. Replies averaged 17 seconds, but the median sat at 210 — the middle of that distribution is far slower than its average, and on a busy evening you will feel the difference. Then the shape of the thing: no character editor, no user-made bots, no catalogue, and a cast written in-house that grows when we write more of it, not when a stranger uploads one. Remembering came up in 0.36% of the messages people sent, the smallest of the three shares above, and we would rather print that than build a page around a feature almost nobody brings up with us. WhatsApp and Telegram are also the only two places TooShy exists at all; if you use neither, there is no version of this for you.

Who each one suits

If the catalogue is what you actually use Character.AI for, stay — none of the four replaces it, and the rest of this is beside the point for you. If you want to write the character yourself and have it hold onto details, Nomi describes memory in the most concrete language of anyone here and costs nothing to try. If you want the largest library that is not Character.AI's, plus a documented route for carrying characters in, PolyBuzz publishes both. If the install is the friction and you want the monthly figure settled before you decide anything, that is us, with the editor missing and the roster fixed. Still to be checked by hand

Some of this needs an account and a hand on it, so it stays open rather than getting filled in with a plausible guess. Nobody here has signed up for Character.AI, Nomi, PolyBuzz or Talkie. Open: whether "Best" memory is noticeably better than "Basic" across a long conversation; how many Charms an ordinary month actually burns through; what Nomi's subscription costs once you are inside; what PolyBuzz charges per coin and how fast coins drain; what Talkie+ costs and what it unlocks; and whether PolyBuzz's migration guides genuinely carry a Character.AI bot across intact. Each of those gets answered when somebody runs it.

How we checked the facts

Every line attributed to Character.AI above came from one of its own pages, fetched on 30 September 2026 at the addresses listed below — the about page for the company details and the scale claims, the c.ai+ page for the tier table and the annual price, the App Store listing for category, rating, descriptors and in-app purchase prices, the Google Play data-safety card for what gets collected, and two posts on its own blog for the under-18 change and the 2024 safety work. Its homepage refused a plain request outright, and its terms and community-guidelines pages assemble themselves in the browser, so only a shell title came back from either; nothing is quoted from those three. The main Google Play listing behaved the same way, which is why no download count appears above. Nomi's, PolyBuzz's and Talkie's lines come from their own homepages on the same date.
