AI Girlfriend Apps That Text You First

Yes, some of them do. For four of the eight products below it is a documented feature with a name, not a hopeful reading of a notification: Replika, Nomi and Kindroid each describe a companion starting a conversation while you are away, in their own words on their own pages, and we publish the rate at which ours does it. Since 8 March 2026, 7,769 of the 105,898 messages our companions have sent were ones they started rather than replies — 7.3%, counted on 13 October 2026.
The other four say nothing about it. Candy.AI, GoLove and Character.AI do not mention unprompted messages anywhere we could read on 13 October 2026, and AI Peeps mentions them only inside a customer review on its own homepage. That is worth knowing before picking one for this particular reason, because “she texts you first” is the kind of line that turns up in advertising and almost never in a help page.
What “texts you first” actually means
Three different things end up being called texting first. The first is a push notification from the company — a new feature, a discount, a nudge that your trial is ending. The second is a scheduled line that fires at a set hour whether or not anything has happened: the good-morning text, same shape every day. The third is a message the companion composes because something in the thread was left unfinished — a plan you mentioned, a day you said would be hard, a photo she said she would send later.
The third one is what people are asking for, and it is the hardest thing to confirm from outside the product. Cadence only shows itself after weeks of living with an app, and nobody can see another company's queue. What can be checked in a day is narrower and still useful: what each company documents about the behaviour, whether the feature sits behind a paywall, and — for a product that keeps the data — what share of its own traffic is actually unprompted.
An app can interrupt you; a messenger has to behave
Where the message has to land matters as much as whether it is sent. An app can wake your phone whenever its own notification rules allow, and the cost of getting it wrong is an uninstall. A messenger thread is stricter: the message arrives in the same list as your sister and your landlord, and an app with no manners there gets blocked rather than muted. WhatsApp is owned by Meta, and sending someone a message they did not just invite means going through the WhatsApp Business Platform and its template-and-window rules — which is why our own WhatsApp side stays quiet for the first 24 hours after a number is linked, and why free WhatsApp companions that message first are rare to the point of absence.
What each product's own pages say about a companion starting the conversation, read on 13 October 2026, ordered by how much of that it documents rather than implies. Character.AI answered with a 403 and AI Peeps keeps the claim inside a customer review, so those two rows stay thin on purpose.

What each one says for itself
Replika is the clearest case. Its App Store listing says the companion “follows up and checks in when it matters, not just when you open the app,” and its homepage shows what that looks like instead of describing it: “waittt there's a tulip pop-up on rue de bretagne that just opened near you,” “thought of you today. no reason,” “you haven't picked up the guitar in a while. everything okay?” Those are written as examples of ordinary behaviour, each one leaning on something remembered from earlier. The listing we read on 13 October 2026 prices subscriptions at $7.99 a month, $49.99 or $69.99 a year and Replika Platinum at $89.99, and the app is iOS and Android with a legacy web app still referenced.
Nomi documents the behaviour in one careful sentence: “Nomis can optionally message you after you have been away for a while.” Its own framing is about agency rather than reminders — the companion continuing the conversation independently instead of poking you to come back. The update announcing it is dated 9 September 2024, which makes Nomi one of the earlier products in this list to ship the feature deliberately. There is no price on the homepage; it says chatting starts free with no credit card, and it runs in a browser as well as through the App Store and Google Play.
Kindroid puts proactive contact plainly on the subscriber side. Its own subscription help page lists “Proactive messages and selfies from your Kindroid” among what a paid plan includes, and names three tiers — Standard, Ultra and MAX — without printing a single amount: “You'll see the exact price for your country and platform at checkout.” The homepage mentions a “Daily check-in” character without explaining how it works. So the feature is documented and the price is not, and a free account will not see it.
Then the ones that do not claim it. Candy.AI runs in a browser as a progressive web app and promotes its installable version for notifications about “New Features,” “Sales and Discounts” and “New Messages” — which is the company telling you something arrived, not a companion deciding to write. GoLove builds its whole homepage on memory, promising that “every conversation feeds permanent memory, so your AI GF carries the relationship forward across days, weeks, and months,” and then asks you to send the first message. Memory that good is a precondition for writing first; it is not the same thing.
AI Peeps is the awkward one. The only mention of unprompted contact on its homepage sits inside a customer review — “from the cadence of the proactive messages, to receiving surprise pictures” — and its plans page names Peep Chat, Peep Pal and Peep Pro without printing amounts. A review is evidence that something happened to somebody, not a description of how the product behaves. Character.AI returned a 403 to our request on 13 October 2026, so its row is blank rather than filled from a review site, and Chai's own site is about its GPU cluster and revenue rather than anything a companion does. We left both unranked instead of guessing.
Our own numbers on unprompted messages
Here is what we can see in our own data, counted on 13 October 2026 and covering every conversation since the first one on 8 March 2026. Our companions have sent 105,898 messages. Of those, 7,769 were unprompted — messages they started, not replies to anything a person had just written — which is 7.3% of everything they sent. Unprompted contact has reached 1,538 of 3,111 conversations, so just under half of the people who have ever talked to one of them have been written to first.
There is a ceiling on it, set per plan rather than per character: four a day on the free Telegram trial, six on Premium, eight on Ultra. Those are limits, not quotas — nobody gets eight messages a day because the plan allows eight. The number also moves on request: asking a companion to ease off lowers it, and telling her to stop sets it to zero, which is why 7.3% is an average over people who want different amounts of this rather than a setting we picked.
All of that is aggregate, pulled from our production database and counted across WhatsApp and Telegram together, with no individual conversation identifiable in any of it. Premium is $9.99 a month, with an Ultra tier above it; the free way in is the Telegram trial, and WhatsApp is paid from the first message.
What the others do better
Replika does two things here we cannot. It has had a decade to tune when a message is welcome and when it is an interruption, and it shows its work — a tulip pop-up on a named street, built out of something you mentioned once, is a far better argument than any percentage. It also needs nothing from you but an install: no messenger to link, no number to confirm, and a free tier that exists as a named, ongoing thing rather than a trial with an end date.
Nomi lets you start without a card at all and keeps the behaviour inside its own app, where the rules are its own and nobody's business platform gets a vote. Kindroid is the only product here that documents proactive selfies alongside proactive messages, which is the version of this most people actually picture. And every one of the three sends into a surface it controls, so none of them has to go quiet for a day the way we do while a new WhatsApp number settles.
Where ours falls short
The 24-hour pause after a WhatsApp number is linked is ours to own: the first day of a new WhatsApp conversation is replies only, and if the reason you came is to be written to first, Telegram is the honest answer for that day. Past the trial, WhatsApp is paid from the first message — there is no free floor on that side at all.
The cast is small and fixed. You pick someone who already exists rather than building her, and nobody here is going to write to you about a character we do not have. And 7.3% is a measurement, not a promise about how any single week will feel: it is the share of messages across everybody, including people who turned the frequency down and people who stopped replying. What it rules out is the opposite claim — that a companion only ever answers — not the possibility that a quiet stretch will feel quiet.
Who each of these suits
- Pick Replika if you want the most practised version of this and do not mind an install, a phone-shaped relationship, and a price that only appears in the store listing.
- Pick Nomi if you want to try the behaviour before paying anything, in a browser, with no card.
- Pick Kindroid if proactive selfies matter as much as proactive messages, and you are willing to subscribe to find out what it costs.
- Pick us if you want it to arrive in a messenger you already have open, with a number attached to how often it actually happens and a cap you control — and if a small cast and a paid WhatsApp side are acceptable trades.
- Skip all of them for this reason if the real need is a specific look on demand or a huge roster to browse: none of the four that document writing first is competing on either.
What was read, and when
Everything quoted above came from each company's own pages, read on 13 October 2026: Replika's homepage and its App Store listing, Nomi's homepage and its updates page, Kindroid's homepage and its subscription help page, Candy.AI's homepage, GoLove's homepage, AI Peeps' homepage and plans page, and Chai's site. Character.AI answered with a 403. Where a company does not publish a price, the row says so instead of carrying an estimate. Our own figures come from our production database on the same day, as aggregates.
Open questions — what still needs a hands-on pass
Nobody here has lived with all eight for a month, and that is the test this question deserves — how a companion writes first in week six, when the obvious openers are used up. Character.AI's behaviour is unknown to us because its site would not answer. AI Peeps' cadence rests on one customer's sentence. Kindroid's and GoLove's prices, and Candy.AI's current plan amounts, are not on the pages we read, so they are missing rather than guessed. We will fill those in when we can check them ourselves.
