What xAI publishes about Ani today, in its own words

Every path we tried on x.ai returned HTTP 403 — the product page, the news index, the terms of service, all blocked outright. grok.com did load, and that was the more interesting result: the signed-out page is a search box, a sign-in link and one sentence of metadata reading "Grok is an AI assistant built by SpaceXAI. Chat, create images, write code, and get real-time answers from the web and X." No companion, no avatar, no character name in it. grok.com/pricing, /subscribe and /companions all return 404. The Apple listing, titled "Grok AI", sold by X Corp. and copyrighted "© xAI Inc.", was updated to version 1.4.42 on 19 September 2026, and its description covers the assistant, image generation, a voice mode and real-time information from X without once naming a companion. Google Play presents the same app under a developer name of SpaceXAI. Three surfaces, three company names, no published description of the character people are searching for.

What SuperGrok costs, on the one page that prints it

The subscription is the one part printed plainly. Apple's listing itemises its in-app purchases: SuperGrok Lite at $10.00, SuperGrok at $30.00, SuperGrok Plus at $100.00, SuperGrok Heavy at $300.00, a second SuperGrok entry at $300.00, and Extra Usage Credits in $5, $20, $50 and $100 blocks. The app carries a 17+ rating with advisories including "Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes". What none of those lines say is which tier a companion belongs to, whether one is included at all, or what the age gate in front of it consists of. The money is documented; the thing you are buying is not.

The four separate things you would be replacing

Strip the question down and four things are bundled together, which is why a straight swap is hard. A persona somebody else wrote, fixed, with a name and a history you did not configure. An animated face on screen while you talk. A voice mode, meaning speech going both ways rather than a recorded clip. And the billing arrangement: one subscription that also buys an assistant, a code helper and an image generator, inside an app tied to an account on X. Different products deliver different subsets, and none of the five we could read delivers all four. Ranking them by how much of that bundle each one publicly documents is the only honest comparison available, so that is the ranking below.

Whose character is it, yours or the company's

The persona question splits this field in half, and it is the part most roundups skip. Replika, Nomi, Kindroid and Candy AI are builders: you configure a companion, name it, pick its look and its manner, and what you talk to is your own construction. Candy AI's FAQ describes creating your own by "selecting preferences such as ethnicity, hairstyle, voice, personality traits, and more". Talkie hands the writing to a crowd; its browse page is stacked with character cards, each carrying a paragraph of backstory from whoever made it. TooShy is the odd one out and, on this narrow point, the closest analogue to a company-written companion: the roster is ours, dozens of characters written and kept consistent in-house, with no builder at all. If the appeal was a character somebody else authored well, that matters. If it was making one yourself, the builders are the right shop.

An animated face and a voice that answers back

The face and the live voice are where the gap is real, and we are on the losing side of it. Replika's App Store description, published by Luka, Inc., says it is "available 24/7 for whatever's on your mind by text, voice calls, and video". Nomi publishes the same capability in more detail: "Send and receive voice chats or hop on a hands-free call. Voice conversations are natural and engaging because as your Nomi's emotions change, so does their voice," alongside selfies that "capture what they are wearing and doing in the moment". Candy AI answers the multimodal question with a flat yes. Character.AI's store listing offers "Chat, call, text, and create with AI Characters". TooShy has voice notes and no call, photos and video but no animated avatar. A recorded clip in a thread is not a face that reacts while you speak, and pretending otherwise would be silly.

A price you can read before you hand over an email

Then there is whether anyone will tell you the price. Apple's page for Grok is unusually forthcoming by this category's standards — four named tiers and four credit blocks, all with figures. Below that, standards collapse. Candy AI's pricing page rendered without a single number for a logged-out visitor; the only figure on it is a "-70%" badge in the navigation. Talkie shows an "Unlock with Talkie+ - 50%" prompt with nothing attached. Nomi's site has no pricing page at all. Replika's homepage, which counts 42,160,934 users worldwide, names no tier and no cost. TooShy prints $9.99 for Premium and $19 for Ultra before anyone signs up — a low bar that most of this field still fails.

Where TooShy lands, third of the five we could read

Add the three tests together and TooShy comes third of the five whose own pages we could read. Replika and Nomi are ahead because the avatar and the two-way call are the heart of the experience being replaced, and we have neither. Candy AI and Talkie sit behind because, whatever they can do, they will not say what it costs until you are inside. Our position rests on two things: the characters are written and maintained by us rather than assembled by you, and the conversation arrives in WhatsApp or Telegram with no app to install, no account to create and a price you can read in advance. There is no third thing.

Our own numbers, the last 30 days

These figures come from TooShy's production database over the 30 days ending 20 September 2026, aggregated so that no individual, conversation or message is identifiable. 44,120 messages moved through WhatsApp and Telegram in that window, from 460 people who wrote something back. A reply took 17 seconds on average. Non-text — photos, voice notes, video — made up 1.1% of what went out, worth saying out loud next to a product built around an animated avatar: this is a text conversation with media in it, not a face on a screen.

What these products genuinely do better

Replika has been at the avatar for the better part of a decade, and its listing is the only one here putting text, voice calls and video in one sentence without hedging. Nomi's description of a voice that shifts as the character's mood shifts is a more specific claim than anyone else makes about speech. Candy AI genuinely spans image, video and voice in one place, which is more surface area than we cover. And whatever else is true of Grok, the SuperGrok ladder is documented in four named tiers with prices — ahead of most of this list on plain disclosure, even with the companion itself undocumented everywhere we could reach.

TooShy's honest limits on this axis

Ours run the other way and they are not small. There is no animated avatar of any kind on TooShy, so if watching a character move while she talks was the point, we do not have it and are not building toward it this year. There is no live voice call at any tier, only recorded voice notes in the thread. There is no character editor, so a companion who does not already exist has nowhere to go. WhatsApp is paid from the first message — the free entry is the Telegram trial. And we publish no age-verification mechanism beyond the messenger's own account rules, which is a weaker answer than a hard gate.

Who each one actually fits

If the animated face and the hands-free call are non-negotiable, Replika and Nomi publish those capabilities on their own pages and one of them will fit better than anything we make. If the appeal was range — video, photographs and voice in one subscription — Candy AI covers that ground, on the understanding that you will not see a price until you have an account. If what you liked was a character somebody else wrote properly, the choice is between a crowd-written library like Talkie and a curated roster like ours. And if the annoying part was the arrangement itself — an app to keep, an account on a social network, a subscription that mostly buys an assistant you did not want — look for a companion that arrives in a messenger you already have.

How we checked the facts

Every claim above was read on the company's own public surfaces on 21 September 2026. x.ai returned 403 on every path requested, so nothing here describes Ani's behaviour, memory, appearance or availability. grok.com was read for its metadata and its 404s; the Grok AI store listing for publisher, version, age rating, advisories and in-app purchase prices; Google Play for the developer name. Replika, Nomi, Candy AI, Talkie, Kindroid and Paradot were each fetched directly, with canonical URLs, og:site_name values and publisher fields checked rather than a domain trusted because it looked right.

None of this tells you how any of them feel over a month, and no page can. It does settle the questions people ask before paying: who wrote the character, whether there is a face and a voice or only text, what the subscription is attached to, and whether anyone will print the price before you commit. On the last one, the company this page is named after does better than most of its rivals — and on describing the companion itself, worse than all of them.
