We couldn't load Character.AI's actual homepage today; every request returned a Cloudflare bot-verification page instead of the site, so the description above leans on its sitemap, robots.txt, and App Store listing rather than its own marketing copy.

Character.AI compared to TooShy

The table reflects only what we could confirm from those three sources today, September 9, 2026. Where Character.AI's public reputation (a strict in-conversation content filter, widely covered in tech press) couldn't be independently re-tested — because the site itself wasn't reachable — we've left it out of the table and put it in open questions instead.

The clearest row is the search itself: Character.AI has no WhatsApp product, by every source we could check. These numbers come from TooShy's own production database, covering the 30 days ending September 1, 2026, reported only as aggregates.

TooShy companions exchanged 47,128 messages across 1,009 active conversations on WhatsApp and Telegram in that window, with a median reply time of 210 seconds. The number worth leading with is 9.0%: the share of those messages a companion sent first, unprompted. Character.AI's own app description doesn't claim proactive outreach anywhere we found — its pitch is about starting a conversation and exploring, not being messaged first.

Media in the same window: 287 photos from a curated pool, 322 generated on request, and 67 videos — 609 pieces of content total, delivered as WhatsApp or Telegram attachments. Character.AI's own listing doesn't advertise AI-generated photos, voice messages, or video at all; its multimedia claim is limited to character voices for calls, which is a different feature than sending a photo or a voice note.

We also looked at what people type in their first three messages to a TooShy companion. A photo request shows up often — 74 messages with "pic," another 69 with "photo" or "picture" — followed by her name (76), some version of "are you real" (41), and her age (34). Character.AI, being text- and voice-call-first with no photo-sending feature, isn't built to answer that first request the same way.

TooShy's pricing is stated upfront: Premium $9.99/month, Ultra $19/month, Telegram free with no card. Character.AI's own App Store listing shows ten separate in-app purchases today, not one or two: a cheaper "Character.AI Lite" tier at $2.49 or $4.99, "Character.AI+" at $9.99/month (matching TooShy's Premium price exactly) or $94.99/year, and six "Charms" virtual-currency packs stacked on top of either subscription, from $0.99 up to $99.99. What Charms actually unlock isn't stated on the page we could reach.

Why living inside WhatsApp changes the daily habit

The habit difference is ordinary but real: Character.AI is a destination you visit — a site or an app you open to browse characters — while a WhatsApp message arrives through notifications you already check all day for everything else.

It also means Character.AI's enormous scale (10,000+ URLs in one of 12 sitemap shards alone) is a different kind of asset than TooShy's small, curated roster. Scale gets you variety; curation gets you consistency. Neither is simply better — they're solving different problems.

And because Character.AI's own site wasn't reachable today, we're relying more on indirect sources — sitemap, robots.txt, App Store — than on the company's own words about its product.
