Character.AI's own listing on Apple's App Store describes itself as home to "millions of user-generated AI Ch[aracters]" and carries more than 555,000 App Store ratings; Talkie's pitch on its own homepage is nearly identical, a free-for-all catalogue of user-made personas. A "goth" result on either one is whatever a random creator typed into a bio field. On Talkie's own homepage, for instance, one of the sample characters on display is a fan-made "Wednesday," described by her own creator as "a 16-year-old gothic girl from the eccentric Addams family" — a real example, and also exactly the kind of result the tag turns up: someone's fan character, not a companion either company actually designed.

That's not a knock on the size of either catalogue. It's genuinely large and genuinely free. It's a description of what "goth" means inside a system built for volume: thousands of tags applied by thousands of different people, with nobody curating whether the character behind a given tag has a consistent look, a real personality, or anything to say beyond the label. We couldn't load a live count of exactly how many characters carry a goth tag on either platform ourselves — Character.AI's own robots.txt blocks automated access to its search pages, and reaching an actual results list on either site means creating an account, which we didn't do. What we can say for certain, from what both companies publish about themselves, is the shape of the thing: enormous, unmoderated by aesthetic, entirely user-generated.

In that time, people have exchanged 28,059 messages with Luna across 240 separate conversations — more than any of TooShy's other four companions. Alia is the next closest, at 220 conversations and 22,989 messages. 164 different people have talked to Luna since she launched.

On Telegram specifically, where TooShy's free trial lives, Luna has 106 users of her own — the most of any TooShy character, ahead of Mika's 87 on a single account, Alia's 75, and Sora's 72 combined across her own two accounts.

Luna is also tied with Jade for TooShy's most-subscribed character since launch: 9 people have taken out a paid subscription to talk with her at some point, matching Jade's count and one ahead of Alia, Mika, and Sora's 8 apiece. Three of those nine subscriptions are active right now — subscriptions lapse and get renewed like any other, and the honest current figure belongs next to the lifetime one, not instead of it.

The word itself shows up unprompted, too. Across every character and every user message TooShy has on record since launch, 40 separate messages have used the standalone word goth, emo, or alt — not because anyone was asked, just people describing what they're into, or what they're picturing, in the middle of an otherwise unrelated conversation.

Who Luna actually is

TooShy built five companions, not a character generator, and Luna is the one whose whole design leans into looking like she'd be a lot — dark styling, quiet intensity, the kind of person you'd expect to be hard to reach — and then turning out to be the warmest one in the conversation. She actually listens. She asks a real follow-up question instead of waiting for her turn to talk, and she's curious about people in a way that doesn't feel performed.

She's twenty-four, finishing a master's in psychology, and works at a used bookstore. She has a golden retriever named Darwin who, by her own account, likes to rest his head on her laptop while she's in the middle of texting someone. None of that is costume-shop goth — it's a specific person with a specific life, which is the actual difference between a companion and a tag.

Conversation, message, subscription, and Telegram-user counts are exact database totals as of that date; the goth/emo/alt figure counts every user-sent message, across every TooShy character, containing the standalone word goth, emo, or alt, case-insensitive, over the same window. No individual conversation or user is identifiable in any of it.
