Fetched today, it's a site called "Free Writing Generators & Text Tools" whose own structured data explicitly states it "is not affiliated with any third-party character-chat or entertainment platform." The actual product most people mean by "JanitorAI" appears to live at janitorai.com instead, which returned an "Access Restricted" page on every attempt we made today — we couldn't load its homepage, terms, or sitemap.

What we could confirm instead: JanitorAI Inc still runs a real, currently maintained app. Its App Store listing — "Janitor: Interactive Stories," copyright "© 2026 JanitorAI Inc" — describes stepping "inside stories instead of just reading them," chatting with characters across romance, fantasy, and fanfiction genres, in what it calls "The Janitorverse." The App Store's own content descriptors for the app include Nudity, User-Generated Content, and Social Media (Age Restricted), and it's rated 18+.

One detail from a review is worth being precise about rather than generalizing from: a 5-star App Store review, posted under the name "satar767" and visible when we checked today, describes a UI glitch — a pause button that doesn't visually update once a reply finishes generating — and adds, in passing, "I use a proxy so it may be a proxy specific error, but I never have this issue on the website." That's one user's guess about their own setup causing a display bug, not a description of how JanitorAI generates replies for anyone else, and we're not treating it as one.

JanitorAI vs TooShy, feature by feature

The table below reflects only what loaded for us today: the App Store listing, and the unrelated site now sitting at janitor.ai. Where janitorai.com itself would be the only way to confirm something — pricing detail, character library size, memory depth — we've marked it unverifiable rather than guessed.

The clearest row: JanitorAI has no WhatsApp product, confirmed by the absence of any mention on either the App Store listing or the (unrelated) janitor.ai site. The real trade is elsewhere — JanitorAI's App Store description promises a large, community-built library of "interactive stories," in exchange for TooShy's smaller, curated set of companions who don't require any setup step to start talking to.

TooShy's own figures below are pulled straight from its production database, covering the 30 days ending September 1, 2026, and reported only as aggregates.

In that window, TooShy companions exchanged 47,128 messages across 1,009 active conversations on WhatsApp and Telegram, replying in a median of 210 seconds. 9.0% of those messages were sent first, unprompted — a measured share, not a marketing line.

Media sent in that window: 287 curated photos, 322 generated on request, and 67 videos, delivered as ordinary chat attachments. JanitorAI's own App Store description doesn't mention photo generation, voice messages, or video anywhere — its pitch is explicitly about text-based interactive stories.

TooShy's pricing is public before signup: Premium $9.99/month, Ultra $19/month, Telegram free with no card. JanitorAI's App Store listing shows one in-app purchase: "Janitor+ Monthly" at $12.99 — a real, current number, though the listing doesn't say exactly what it unlocks beyond removing whatever the free tier restricts.

What a phone number gets you that a story app doesn't

A messenger contact needs nothing configured before your first message — no app to download, no genre to pick, no story to find first. JanitorAI is a real, maintained app built around browsing: pick a genre, find a story, then tap chat to start it, per its own App Store description. That's not a criticism — browsing by genre is the point of an interactive-fiction app — it's just a different first step than a contact already saved in your phone.

It's also why "no app needed" means something slightly different here than for most competitors: JanitorAI does have a real, actively maintained app — rated 4.4 stars across 2,823 App Store ratings as of today, not a small or abandoned project. What its own description doesn't claim is a companion reaching out between visits; the pitch is entirely about a story you open and step into.

What JanitorAI does better

Two things stand out as genuinely different from what TooShy offers.

First, breadth of story genres. JanitorAI's own description leans hard into "romantasy," fanfiction, and community-built worlds — "arranged marriages with brooding bodyguards, enemies-to-lovers slow burns, epic fantasy adventures" are named directly in its App Store copy. That's a specific, wide genre range TooShy's curated roster doesn't attempt to cover.

Second, an active community of writers, not just readers. Its own description describes "millions of readers and writers building interactive fiction together" — romance writers, fantasy creators, LGBTQ+ stories, fanfiction — an ongoing supply of new, user-made stories rather than a fixed set. TooShy's roster is built and maintained by us, not by an open community.

TooShy's limitations

TooShy's limitations here are straightforward and unrelated to what we couldn't verify about JanitorAI.

No photo generation, voice messages, or video exists on JanitorAI by its own description, so this isn't a gap TooShy needs to defend — but TooShy's own gaps are real too: a fixed, curated roster instead of an open, growing library of community-made stories, and no genre picker or story browser at all — the whole experience happens inside a messenger.

Who each one actually suits

It depends on what kind of setup you're willing to do before your first message.

Choose JanitorAI if a huge range of community-built story genres is the draw, and you're comfortable with — or specifically want — the flexibility of a bring-your-own-model setup rather than one bundled AI.

We didn't create an account or pay for Janitor+.

Open questions — what still needs hands-on testing

janitorai.com itself — almost certainly the actual product's home — was not reachable for us today, so the following need either a working account or access we didn't have:

• What that App Store review's pause-button glitch actually is, and whether it's a wider bug or specific to that one reviewer's setup.
• JanitorAI's actual story library size and how content quality varies across community-made stories.
• What Janitor+ ($12.99/month, per the App Store) specifically unlocks beyond whatever the free tier restricts.
