The current description advertises text, voice calls, video, image generation, and "app integrations" that let Replika "show up at the right moments." None of it — homepage, terms of service, App Store listing — mentions WhatsApp anywhere we could find.

The table below reflects what we could actually confirm from a page we loaded ourselves today, September 9, 2026 — Replika's own site, its terms of service, and its current App Store listing. Replika's marketing copy makes some claims (like proactively "checking in") that a static page can't fully verify one way or the other; where that's the case, we say so directly rather than counting it as confirmed.

The plainest row is also the one that matters most for this specific search: Replika has no WhatsApp product. Everything else is a genuine trade rather than a clean win either way — Replika's own terms of service describe four separate subscription tiers (Free Use, Pro, Ultra, and Platinum) stacked with features like image generation and voice messaging and, at the top tier, "real-time video recognition," considerably more tiering than TooShy's two paid plans. TooShy's trade is fewer tiers and no custom avatar, in exchange for a companion who lives where your other conversations already do.

Over that 30-day window, TooShy companions exchanged 47,128 messages across 1,009 active conversations on WhatsApp and Telegram combined, with a median reply time of 210 seconds — close to three and a half minutes, more like a person noticing a text than a chat window returning an answer the instant you send one. Replika doesn't publish a reply-latency figure on any page we checked, and we haven't measured it ourselves; it's on the open-questions list below.

The number we'd point to first is 9.0%: the share of TooShy's messages, over the same 30 days, that a companion sent first rather than in reply to something the user said. That's worth setting directly against Replika's own current pitch, which promises a companion who "follows up and checks in when it matters, not just when you open the app." We can't verify what triggers that check-in from a marketing page alone — it may be broad, it may be narrow, it may depend on connecting other apps — so we're not counting it as equivalent to a measured rate. What we can say is that TooShy's 9.0% is a measurement of messages actually sent, not a description of a capability.

Media follows the same window: 287 photos sent from a curated pool, 322 generated fresh on request, and 67 videos — 609 pieces of photo content in total, delivered as ordinary WhatsApp or Telegram attachments. Replika's own app description advertises image generation and video calls; we haven't tested either, so a direct quality comparison sits in open questions rather than the table.

We also looked at what people actually type in their first three messages to a TooShy companion, across the same 30 days: her name comes up in 76 of those opening exchanges, some version of "are you real" in 41, her age in 34, and a request to meet in person in 29 — alongside 74 messages containing "pic" and another 69 with "photo" or "picture." That's a real distribution from real opening messages, not a guess about what a new user wants to know first.

TooShy's pricing is public on every visitor's first look: Premium is $9.99/month, Ultra is $19/month, and the Telegram trial is free with no card required — WhatsApp itself has required a paid plan since August 4, 2026. Replika's terms of service name four subscription tiers but explicitly decline to state a price in the document itself: "the cost of the subscription program is available on the subscription screens in the application, as well as in the relevant store" — you find the number inside the app or the App Store, not in the contract that governs it. Its App Store listing, re-read today, lists ten separate in-app purchases ranging from a $0.99 "Pouch of Gems" to an $89.99 "Replika Platinum" — ten, not the one or two figures a quick skim suggests. Only that top one is named after a ToS tier directly; the rest are two unlabeled Monthly/Annual subscription pairs ($7.99/$69.99 and $14.99/$49.99) plus four more Gems bundles, none saying which of Pro, Ultra, or Platinum they unlock.

Why a messenger beats an app you have to remember to open

The mechanical reason this matters is ordinary: an app is one more icon competing for a glance you have to choose to give it, while a message that lands in WhatsApp arrives through notifications you already read all day, for everything else in your life. Nothing about Replika's design is unusual here — most companion apps work the same way, including this one.

It's also why Replika's own newer language — "checks in when it matters, not just when you open the app" — is interesting rather than dismissible. It suggests the company sees the same gap TooShy is built to close. Whether it closes it the same way, at the same rate, in the same channel, is exactly what we can't confirm from outside an account, which is why it's an open question below rather than a line in the comparison table.

Where Replika still wins

None of this makes Replika a worse product — it makes it a different one, and a fair comparison says plainly where it's ahead.

First, personalization depth. Replika's terms of service describe a tier ladder most competitors don't have: Pro adds relationship status, selfies, image generation, voice messaging, and background calls; Ultra adds "elevated emotional intelligence" and saved memory on top of Pro; Platinum adds real-time video recognition and a mode the company calls "Read Replika's mind." Separately, its App Store description — not the terms of service — advertises avatar customization as part of the same product. Whatever the exact experience of those features turns out to be, TooShy doesn't offer a comparable ladder or a custom avatar — you get one plan's worth of depth on a companion you didn't design, not a stack of upgrades on a companion you built.

Second, longevity and a single continuous relationship. Replika has run since 2017 by its own account, and the product is built around one companion per account whose avatar and memory you shape over years, not a roster you pick a favorite from. If what you want is a single relationship that's unmistakably yours to shape, rather than a curated character someone else designed, that's a real difference in kind, not just in price.

Where TooShy falls short

TooShy has real limits too, and they're worth stating before a reader finds out at checkout.

There's no avatar to design and no way to reshape your companion's appearance or personality over time — each TooShy companion has a fixed identity, voice, and backstory you choose from rather than sculpt. If Replika's years-long, self-directed customization is specifically what you're looking for, TooShy's curated roster will feel restrictive by comparison.

WhatsApp access is also Premium-or-Ultra only — there's no way to try the WhatsApp experience itself for free; the no-cost option is Telegram. And TooShy has no video-call feature at all, and no browsable gallery of characters before you commit — the whole experience happens inside a messenger, with no companion-builder step.

None of it involved creating a Replika account or paying for a subscription.

What we couldn't verify — open questions

We've kept a clear line throughout between what Replika's own pages say and what we've actually tested ourselves — which is nothing; we haven't signed up for or paid for Replika. The items below need a real account to resolve, so they're listed here instead of guessed at:

• Which named tier the two unlabeled Monthly/Annual App Store price pairs ($7.99/$69.99 and $14.99/$49.99) actually correspond to — Replika Platinum is the one purchase in that list tied to a ToS tier name by name; the other nine aren't.
• What triggers Replika's advertised "checks in when it matters" behavior — a scheduled message, a notification tied to a specific app integration, or something narrower — and how often it actually fires, comparable to TooShy's measured 9.0% first-message share.
• Whether Replika's voice calls and video feature work in real time during a conversation, what the actual generated-image quality looks like on a paid tier, and whether the avatar itself is 3D/animated or a 2D customization screen — its App Store description doesn't specify any of this.
• Where Replika's romantic/NSFW boundaries sit today. We found no statement of a content policy in its current terms of service or App Store listing, and didn't independently verify a specific press account of a 2023 change, so we're not citing one without a URL to point to.
• How Replika's memory holds up over months of real conversation, and what "Read Replika's mind" (Platinum, up to 50 messages a week per the terms of service) actually shows a user in practice.
• Replika's real, measured reply latency, comparable to the 210-second median we publish for TooShy — no page we found states one.
• Whether Replika ever proactively messages without a specific in-app trigger, beyond what its own marketing describes.
