Free AI Girlfriend Apps: Where the Wall Is

Character.AI, SpicyChat and Nomi all let you keep talking without ever entering a card, and what they charge for first is memory, speed and pictures rather than the conversation itself. DreamGF is the only one of the nine products below that publishes an exact free number: 10 messages a day, rising by one per consecutive day to 50. Our own free way in is a Telegram trial, and on WhatsApp there's no free door at all.
Three shapes of free
Free splits three ways here. Some products keep the chat running forever and quietly degrade it — ads, slower replies, shorter memory. Some hand out a daily allowance you can count down to zero. Some give a trial and then a paywall with no free floor underneath. Only the first kind lets you stay for months without paying anything.
Character.AI's own side-by-side of free against c.ai+ publishes no message counter at all. The free column says: ads "full"; slow mode "yes"; memory "basic" against "best"; 15 pins against 30; daily feature limits "limited" against "highest". The wall isn't a number you collide with — it's the experience thinning while the conversation carries on. c.ai+ costs $94.99 a year against $119.88 paying monthly.
SpicyChat publishes the sharpest free figure of the lot, and it's about memory rather than messages: 4,096 tokens of context free, identical to what the cheapest paid tier gets, against 8,192 on True Supporter and up to 32,768 on I'm All In. Its documentation works the example through — a 1,000-token character plus 150-token messages leaves room for roughly twenty recent messages. Free replies cap at 180 tokens, paid ones at 300.
Nine products ordered by how much you can do without paying — and by how clearly each one states where that ends. The last two we couldn't reach.

The daily counters that get published
DreamGF runs the counter you can actually watch. Its Daily Claim Bonus gives 10 messages on the first day and adds one for each consecutive day, reaching 50 on day 40 — and missing a single day resets you to 10. Plans run from $9.99 a month (Bronze) to $99.99 (Diamond), with no message or credit count stated against any of them.
Candy AI advertises "Join Free", a "Create Free Account" button and an invitation to "start slow with the free trial". Its FAQ covers privacy, discreet billing and what a companion can send you — and carries no free message count, no token count and no trial length. Tokens arrive with a subscription, are spent across voice, chat, image and video, and can be topped up. How many, before paying, isn't public.
CrushOn AI and Janitor AI we couldn't check. Both sites sat behind a challenge screen that never resolved for us on 20 September 2026, so neither their free limits nor their prices are things we're willing to state. Third-party write-ups carry confident figures for both; we're not repeating numbers we couldn't read on the products' own pages.
What the money buys first
Across everything that did load, the first thing behind the wall is consistent, and it isn't text. It's memory — SpicyChat's context ceiling, Character.AI's pins and lorebook. Then pictures: Candy AI's tokens, Replika's selfies and image generation. Then voice, then queue priority. Typed conversation is the loss leader here; what gets metered is everything that makes a companion feel continuous.
Replika's terms spell the split out by name. "Free Use" is defined there as limited access "aimed at users who cannot afford any of our subscription-fee based programs". Pro unlocks relationship status, selfies, image generation, voice messaging, background calls, daily gems and premium voices. Ultra adds smarter conversations and saving messages to memory. Platinum adds video recognition and weekly quotas — training mode up to 100 a week, reading your Replika's mind up to 50 messages.
Nomi has the softest landing if you stop paying. Its refund policy states that downgrading to the free tier removes none of your Nomis and doesn't block one-to-one chats; group chats, video creation, voice messages and calls go read-only instead. Existing content isn't deleted, though the policy declines to guarantee it's kept. Nothing is refundable — no partial months, no unused time.
Trials and automatic renewal
None of these run a card-first trial that silently flips into a charge. What they run is ordinary auto-renewal once you've chosen to subscribe. Character.AI's subscribe panel says the subscription "auto-renews yearly. Cancel in settings anytime." Nomi calls its model opt-in and renews monthly, quarterly or yearly unless you cancel before the date. Replika's terms: renewal fees "will continue to be billed… automatically until canceled", with seven days' grace before a failed payment drops you back to Free Use.
SpicyChat's pricing FAQ is worth reading before subscribing on impulse. Prices rose on 8 September 2026 — Get A Taste from $5.00 to $5.95 a month, True Supporter from $14.95 to $19.95, I'm All In from $24.95 to $29.95 — and existing subscribers keep the old price only while that exact plan stays active and unchanged. Any change, including a downgrade, moves you to current pricing.
Our numbers, and our own wall
Ours, from production over the 30 days ending 20 September 2026, aggregated so that no individual conversation is identifiable: 44,120 messages, from 460 people who actually wrote something. An active conversation averaged 64 messages, the longest ran to 899, and the average wait for a reply was 17 seconds. Text dominates — only 1.1% of those messages were anything other than typed words.
Our free entry is the Telegram trial: you start talking in Telegram without paying and without a card. WhatsApp is the other half of what we do, and that side has no free door — it's paid from the first message. Past the trial, Premium is $9.99 a month and Ultra is $19, with 14 companions live across both messengers.
Where these beat us, and who each one suits
Two things beat us plainly. Character.AI and Nomi both have a permanent free floor: talk for months, stop paying, and there's still somewhere to land — Nomi's policy explicitly keeps your companions and one-to-one chats after a downgrade. We have no equivalent; when the trial ends, free ends. DreamGF wins on something smaller that matters to anyone counting pennies: it prints the number on its own homepage.
Our gaps are just as plain. Fourteen characters is a rounding error beside catalogues with thousands in them. The 17-second average and the 899-message conversation describe what happens once you're in, not how much you get before paying — and we don't publish a per-day message number for the Telegram trial either, which is the complaint we just made about Candy AI. WhatsApp being paid-only costs anyone who doesn't use Telegram.
If you want to talk indefinitely and never pay, Character.AI and Nomi are the honest answers, ads and thinner memory included. If long-conversation memory is what you'd pay for, SpicyChat prices it openly by token count. If you like watching a counter, DreamGF shows one. If a companion inside the messenger already on your phone beats a big catalogue, start with the Telegram trial, then the $9.99 tier.
How we checked these numbers
Everything above came off the products' own public pages on 20 September 2026: Character.AI's c.ai+ comparison, SpicyChat's documentation and September pricing FAQ, Replika's terms and App Store listing, Nomi's cancellation and refund policies, DreamGF's homepage FAQ, Candy AI's homepage FAQ. Where a page published no number, we've said so instead of estimating; where a site wouldn't open, we've left the row empty.
