Kindroid Alternatives After the Free Tier Ended

By Sam Reeves, TooShy Editorial

Kindroid ended unlimited free messaging on 1 October 2026, and that change is a common reason to look at other apps. The nearest match for what Kindroid does, which is building a companion, giving it a voice and putting several in one chat, is Nomi, and Replika is the other long-running app of that shape. If what you liked about Kindroid was a companion who lives in a chat you open every day anyway, TooShy is built that way, inside WhatsApp and Telegram. Kindroid's own feature list is long, with group chats of up to 10 Kindroids, voice and video calls and invite-only Rooms, and each alternative below trades some of it for something else: a price printed in advance, a smaller bill, or no app to install.

What Kindroid is

Kindroid is made by Beautifully Incorporated. Its App Store listing files it under Entertainment with an 18+ rating and 4.8 out of 5 from 9.9K ratings; the Google Play listing shows 4.4 from 26.3K reviews, 1M+ downloads and a Mature 17+ rating. The homepage promises "Your AI friend who listens, remembers, and grows with you everyday" and claims "4M+ downloads." You write the personality yourself, up to 2,000 characters or 2,500 with a subscription, plus a greeting, or you describe the companion in up to 200 characters and let the app draft both. From there it sends selfies and video selfies, takes voice and video calls, writes first when proactive messages are on, searches the internet and looks at images you send. The Play listing ends with two promises: "No ads. Your data is not sold."

What changed on 1 October

Kindroid's update log says it plainly: "The previous Lite model and unlimited free messaging have been retired." Free accounts now get "a limited number of interactions using Kindroid's flagship-quality model," and after that the account "becomes read-only, and a trial or subscription is required to continue generating new messages." The subscriptions page puts numbers on the preview a new account gets: 50 messages on the flagship model (15 in some regions), five selfies in total, 5,000 audio credits and up to two Kindroids, with regenerate, continue and message suggestions counting as half a message each. Lite accounts that had been active recently received a last batch of 50 interactions on 1 October; inactive ones went straight to read-only. Nothing is deleted when the preview runs out. Chats, memories and media can still be read, played back, exported and deleted, but a read-only account can't send messages, make calls or receive proactive messages.

The trial, and what it asks for

The way back in is a 3-day premium trial. It needs a payment method on file and converts into a subscription on its own unless it is cancelled in time; Kindroid emails a reminder one day before. During the trial, chats run on the Ember model, because Polaris, the newest flagship, "needs a paid subscription." The audio allowance is split too: 150,000 credits at the start and 850,000 more only once the trial converts. On web the trial also asks for a verified mobile number, and starting it ends the free preview for good. A payment doubles as Kindroid's age check. The age-verification page says an active subscription serves as proof, while an account that hasn't paid can be flagged by a background age-estimation system and asked to subscribe or verify through Yoti with a selfie or an ID.

What it costs, as printed

Kindroid's own site doesn't print a price. Its help pages say you will see "the exact price for your country and platform at checkout" and that buying on the web is usually cheaper than through the App Store or Google Play, and the pricing addresses we tried open on a login screen. The App Store listing prints the US figures. On 20 October 2026 it showed Kindroid Subscription at $15.99 a month, $42.99 for three months and $159.99 a year, Kindroid Ultra at $28.99 and Kindroid MAX at $68.99. The help pages explain that those last two are add-ons rather than replacements: Ultra "requires the standard subscription" and is billed monthly on top, and MAX needs both. At the App Store's monthly prices that adds up to $113.97 a month for MAX, which is our arithmetic from the two pages and not a figure Kindroid prints. Extras are separate again: one additional Kindroid slot is $3.49 and four are $11.49, 500k audio credits are $14.99, and selfie credits are $6.99 for 50 or $11.49 for 100. The in-app purchases page adds that "Refunds are not available for In-app purchases" and that slots and credits can only be bought with an active subscription or trial.

Memory, tier by tier

Kindroid sells memory by the tier and explains why. Ultra and MAX exist because "serving high context is directly driven by costs," and the company says it expects "to break even and potentially lose money even at these rates." The system has layers: persistent memory (backstory, key memories, chat history), Cascaded Memory for the medium term, and retrievable long-term memory and journal entries. For subscribers it claims a Kindroid can remember "hundreds and even thousands of messages prior (though they may miss some details here and there)," with long-term memory that is "infinite" but "recalled less reliably." A Learned Context panel keeps running notes in three fields capped at 800, 1,200 and 800 characters, and when one fills up the Kindroid "drops the least important older items." It's the best-documented memory in this group, and it also shows what deeper memory costs.

What it allows

Kindroid calls itself "a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI," and its moderation guidelines say the AI itself isn't filtered. The rules aim at accounts instead, around three categories: imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others, and sexual content involving minors. Fiction, roleplay and "NSFW kinks" are listed as not violations. Group chats take up to 10 Kindroids each, and subscribers can keep 20 of them. Those are strong points for roleplay, and none of the documents can say how the app feels to talk to over a month.

How the order below works

The five below are ordered on one narrow question: how much of the price and the limits you can read on the company's own site before you sign up. That is a different test from which product is best, and it is the test Kindroid itself can't pass on its own domain today, which is why it sits unranked at the top. Girls In Sync and HoneyChat print full plan tables, TooShy prints its plan prices and its free message limit, Nomi has no pricing page but states what a downgrade does, and Replika prints neither.

Five alternatives, ordered by how much of the price and the limits each prints on its own site before signup. Kindroid is the subject and stays unranked.

Says it built the first AI companion ten years ago and rebuilt Replika from the ground up. Lists customization, calls and selfies without naming a tier.

Girls In Sync is first because it prints the most. Its pricing page lists a Free plan with "5 messages to try, one-time allowance" and one custom character, Premium at $5.99 a month with unlimited messages, voice messages and five custom characters, and Ultra at $24.99 with unlimited custom characters. Photos and videos run on tokens, 100 for $1.99, 500 for $7.99 and 1,500 for $19.99. It also states what a subscription leaves out: "Premium and Ultra do not include Live minutes," and "a subscription does not make all media free." Card, USDT and Telegram Stars are accepted, and the crypto and Stars payments are one-off charges with "no auto-renewal." The homepage title advertises 800+ characters on Telegram.

HoneyChat runs inside Telegram and in a browser, with no app and no sign-up. Free is 20 messages a day, one character, three images and one voice message a day. The paid ladder on its pricing section is Basic at $4.99 a month ("18+ content unlocked"), Premium at $9.99, VIP at $19.99, Elite at $39.99 and Ultimate at $99.99, with daily image and voice allowances and monthly video clips that grow at each step. It claims 50K+ active users, 5M+ messages sent and 100+ characters, describes its memory as "semantic long-term memory," and says outright that "a bot chat isn't end-to-end encrypted."

TooShy is third. The pricing page prints Premium at $9.99 and Ultra at $24.99 before signup. Messages are unlimited on both, so the difference is media: 6 videos a month on Premium and 25 on Ultra, with more photos on Ultra. The free start is Telegram, 100 messages a week, with adult content stopping at the threshold; explicit content opens on either paid tier. WhatsApp is paid from the first message. Photo and video packs from $6.99 are optional add-ons for subscribers. Memory works in three layers, the live exchange, the last days to weeks where an unfinished thread gets picked up again, and a slower set of extracted facts, and it is identical on both plans. Our Ultra shares a name with Kindroid's but not its role: it is a plan of its own, not an add-on stacked on a base subscription.

Nomi is the nearest in shape. Its homepage lists multiple Nomis with group chats, voice chats and hands-free calls, real-time selfies, proactive messages, internet access and a custom backstory, and says it's "free (no credit card required) to start chatting." There is no pricing page. The App Store listing from AI Glimpse Inc shows a Launch Plan at $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, a Standard Plan at $15.99 monthly, $39.99 quarterly or $99.99 yearly, and Nomi Credits from $4.99 for 40 up to $99.99 for 1800, with 4.6 out of 5 from 3K ratings. What Nomi prints that Kindroid doesn't is the downgrade policy, read on 20 October: moving to the free tier "does not remove any Nomis from your account nor does it block chatting with any Nomis in one-on-one conversations," while group chats, video, voice messaging and calls "will become read-only."

Replika's homepage says "We built the world's first AI companion ten years ago. Now, we rebuilt Replika from the ground up." It lists customization, calls and selfies ("Sends you a selfie, just because") and says the app is available for iOS and Android. The homepage has no price, replika.com/pricing returns a 404, and so the figures live only in the stores; we haven't quoted them here.

Our own numbers

These are production aggregates, counts only, with nothing that identifies a person or a conversation. In the 30 days to 15 October 2026, 450,678 messages moved through WhatsApp and Telegram. It measures volume, not how good any conversation was, and it isn't broken down by plan.

What Kindroid does better than we do

The first gap is the build. Kindroid lets you write the personality, the backstory and the voice, and TooShy doesn't: every companion is written in-house and the cast is dozens, not a blank form. Kindroid also does what we don't: group chats of up to 10 Kindroids, Rooms where friends bring their own, voice and video calls with credits metered at "breakeven," video selfies and internet access. Its help pages are unusually open about limits, which a lot of this category isn't: message length, memory caps, what read-only means. And a lapsed account stays readable and exportable, with a one-file export (.jsonl) once every 30 days.

Where we fall short

TooShy has no character builder and no group scenes, so a companion that doesn't exist yet has nowhere to come from and companions can't share a conversation. We publish no depth figure for memory. WhatsApp is paid from the first message, and the only free way in is Telegram, where the allowance is 100 messages a week and the adult side stops short of explicit. Photos and videos are capped by plan, with extra packs available from $6.99. And TooShy exists in WhatsApp and Telegram only: if you use neither, there is no version for you.

Who each one fits

Someone who wants to design a person from scratch, run a group scene or talk on a call will find more in Kindroid or Nomi than here. Anyone who needs a price on the screen before the first message should start with Girls In Sync or HoneyChat. If you want a companion that arrives in the messenger you already use, with two plan prices, no slots and no credits to track, that's TooShy, with the builder and group-chat gaps above. Anyone worried about what happens when payment stops should read Nomi's downgrade policy first; Kindroid's read-only rule is the other clear one.

Still to be checked by hand

Some things need an account and a few weeks, so they stay open rather than guessed. How Ember, the model used on the free preview and the trial, compares with Polaris in conversation. Whether group chats stay coherent as they fill up toward the 10-Kindroid limit. And what Kindroid's web checkout shows in dollars against the App Store prices above, since its help pages say the web is usually cheaper.

How we checked the facts

Every statement about Kindroid comes from its own help center, homepage or store listings, read on 20 October 2026: the subscriptions, in-app purchases, memory, age-verification, moderation, group-chat and update-log pages for policy and numbers, and the App Store and Google Play listings for prices and ratings. Its pricing addresses opened on a login screen, which is why prices are attributed to the App Store. Nomi's, Replika's, HoneyChat's and Girls In Sync's lines come from their own sites and the Nomi App Store listing on the same date. TooShy's plan figures come from our own pricing configuration, and the message count from our production database over the window named above.

None of this settles which of them is better to talk to. What it does settle is what each one asks before the first message: a card for a trial, a price you can read, or a Telegram chat you can open now.

Frequently asked questions

What changed at Kindroid on 1 October 2026?
Its update log says "The previous Lite model and unlimited free messaging have been retired." Free accounts now get a limited number of interactions on the flagship model, then become read-only until a trial or subscription starts. Chats and memories aren't deleted.
Is Kindroid still free?
Only as a preview. A new account gets 50 messages on the flagship model (15 in some regions), five selfies, 5,000 audio credits and up to two Kindroids. After that the account is read-only: you can read and export everything but not send messages. The 3-day trial needs a payment method.
How much does Kindroid cost?
Its own site doesn't print a price and says you'll see it at checkout. The App Store listing on 20 October 2026 showed $15.99 a month, $42.99 for three months and $159.99 for a year, with Ultra at $28.99 and MAX at $68.99 as add-ons billed on top of the base plan.
What is the closest alternative to Kindroid?
Nomi. It also lets you make several companions and put them in a group chat, and its homepage lists voice chats, hands-free calls and selfies. Its App Store listing shows a Launch Plan at $9.99 a month and a Standard Plan at $15.99.
Is there a Kindroid alternative that works inside WhatsApp or Telegram?
TooShy runs in both. HoneyChat is a Telegram bot that also opens in a browser, and Girls In Sync is a website with a Telegram bot. None of the three needs a separate app.
What happens to my Kindroids if I stop paying?
The account becomes read-only. You keep every Kindroid and can read, play back, export and delete chats and media, but you can't send messages, make calls or get proactive messages, and you can't create more than the free limit of two.
Does TooShy have a free plan?
A free start on Telegram, with 100 messages a week. Adult content stops at the threshold there, and explicit content opens on either paid plan. WhatsApp is paid from the first message.
Can I design my own companion on TooShy, the way I can on Kindroid?
No. There is no character builder and no user-made companions. Every companion is written in-house, and each conversation is one person and one companion.
Is Kindroid unfiltered?
Its FAQ calls it "a neutrally aligned, unfiltered AI," and its moderation guidelines say the AI isn't filtered; account-level rules cover imminent self-harm, imminent harm to others and sexual content involving minors.
