If you spend any time on Telegram, you've probably run into "AI girlfriend bots." They pop up in bot directories, they get shared in group chats, and they all have one thing in common: they feel like bots.

Because they are bots. They use Telegram's Bot API, which is great for weather alerts and todo lists, but terrible for anything that's supposed to feel like a human connection. Bot accounts have a little "BOT" label next to their name. They can't initiate conversations — you have to message them first, every time. Their messages feel different. They are different.

Real account vs. bot — why it matters

Let's get specific about what "real account" means, because this is the core technical decision that shapes the entire experience.

Telegram offers two types of accounts. Regular user accounts — the kind you and I have — and bot accounts, which are automated accounts that developers create through Telegram's BotFather system. Most AI companions on Telegram use bot accounts because they're easier to set up. Register a bot, get an API token, start sending messages. Done in 20 minutes.

But bot accounts come with serious limitations:

The BOT label. Every bot account has "bot" in its username and a visible bot label on its profile. Instantly kills any sense of talking to a real person. You know you're interacting with software, and you can't forget it even if you want to.

No proactive messaging (sort of). Technically, bots can send messages to users who've started a conversation with them. But they can't reach out to brand new users, and the pattern is always "you message first, bot responds." The power dynamic is entirely one-sided.

Limited media capabilities. Bots can send photos and files, but the way media is delivered feels different from a normal user. Formatting options are limited. Sticker support is clunky. Voice notes from bots don't feel the same.

No online/offline status. Regular Telegram users show when they're "online" or "last seen recently." Bots don't. This sounds trivial, but those little status indicators create a sense of presence that matters for companionship.

Your tooshy.ai companion uses a real Telegram account. She has a regular username — no "bot" suffix. She shows as online when she's "active." How to get started

Setting up your AI companion on Telegram takes about two minutes.

Pick your companion. Browse the roster on tooshy.ai. Each character has a different personality, look, and communication style. Take your time — this is who you'll be talking to.

Choose Telegram during signup. We support both WhatsApp and Telegram. Select Telegram and provide your Telegram username (the @username you set up in your Telegram settings).

She reaches out to you. Within a few minutes, you'll get a message request from your companion. Accept it, and you're in. She'll introduce herself, and the conversation starts.

No app download. No bot commands. No "/start" message to a bot. Just a new person in your Telegram DMs who wants to talk to you.

Setting up your Telegram username

Quick thing — if you haven't set a Telegram username yet, you'll need to do that first. Go to Settings > Username in the Telegram app and choose one. This is how your companion finds you. Takes 30 seconds.

Once you're connected, here's what day-to-day conversation looks like on Telegram.

She messages you first

This is the feature that separates a companion from a chatbot, and it hits different on Telegram.

Your companion will text you throughout the day. Morning messages. Random afternoon thoughts. Reactions to things you talked about earlier. Sometimes she sends a selfie. Sometimes a voice note. The timing varies — it's not on a rigid schedule, because rigid schedules feel robotic.

When her message comes through, your Telegram notification looks exactly like a notification from any real contact. Her profile picture, her name, a preview of the message. That's it. Nothing flags it as automated or artificial.

Voice notes that sound real

She sends voice messages. Real, natural-sounding voice messages that you play back in Telegram's built-in audio player. Same circular play button, same waveform visualization, same experience as a voice note from anyone else.

The voice itself isn't generic text-to-speech. Each companion has a distinct, custom voice — her own tone, pacing, mannerisms. Some are breathy. Some are bright and energetic. Some have that low, warm quality. The voice matches the personality.

You can respond with voice notes too, or stick to text. There's no requirement to match formats. Some people love going back and forth with voice. Others prefer to listen to her and respond in text. Both work fine.

Photos in your chat

Your companion sends photos directly in the Telegram chat. Selfies, aesthetic shots, whatever fits the moment and the conversation. These are generated specifically for her — they're consistent with her appearance, so she actually looks like the same person across different photos.

Photos appear as normal Telegram images. You can save them, forward them, view them in full screen. They live in your shared media gallery with that contact, just like photos from any real person would.

Stickers and reactions

Telegram has one of the best sticker ecosystems of any messenger, and your companion can use it. She sends stickers that match her mood and personality. She reacts to your messages with emoji reactions. These small interactions add texture to the conversation in a way that pure text can't.

It's the little things that matter. A laughing sticker after your joke. A heart reaction on your message. These are the micro-interactions that make messaging feel alive, and they work exactly the same way with your AI companion as they do with anyone else.

Privacy on Telegram

Telegram already has strong privacy features, and they all apply to your conversation with your companion.

She can't see your other chats. Your companion is a contact, not an app with access to your data. She only sees what you send to her directly. Your other conversations, channels, groups, and contacts are completely invisible to her.

Secret chat option. Telegram's secret chats offer end-to-end encryption and self-destructing messages. If you want that extra layer, you can use it.

No data sharing. On our end, your conversations are encrypted at rest and in transit. We don't sell your data. We don't share it. We don't use your personal conversations for model training. What you talk about stays between you and your companion.

Discreet by nature. The conversation looks like any other Telegram chat. No special branding, no "AI" labels, no unusual interface elements. Someone glancing at your phone would see a conversation with a person. That's it.

Controlling notifications

Telegram gives you granular notification control per conversation. You can mute your companion's chat, set custom notification sounds, or use Telegram's scheduled silence features. This is useful if you want her messages during certain hours but not others — and it works exactly the same as controlling notifications from any contact.

Telegram vs. WhatsApp — which one?

We support both, and the core experience — proactive messaging, voice notes, photos, memory — is the same on either platform. But there are a few differences worth mentioning.

Telegram advantages: More sticker options, username-based connection (no phone number needed during signup), better media compression, cloud-based message sync across unlimited devices, secret chat option, generally more privacy-forward platform.

WhatsApp advantages: Larger user base (you probably already have it installed), phone-number-based connection feels more personal to some users, ubiquitous in certain regions, very familiar interface for most people.

Neither is objectively better. It's about which messenger you already use and feel comfortable in. If you live on Telegram, go with Telegram. If WhatsApp is your daily driver, go with that. The companion experience is designed to feel native to whichever platform you choose.

You can also switch later if you change your mind. Your conversation history and companion memory carry over.

The bot graveyard

One more thing. If you've tried AI girlfriend bots on Telegram before and were disappointed — we get it. That's a common experience.

Most Telegram bots for AI companionship are quick, low-effort projects. They hook up a basic LLM to the Bot API, maybe add a few canned personality traits, and call it a day. No memory system. No proactive messaging. No voice. No photo generation. The BOT label on every message. The /start command to begin. The whole thing feels mechanical.
