Talkie AI Alternatives: Four Apps Checked

The closest Talkie alternatives are Character.AI, PolyBuzz and Nomi, plus TooShy if you would rather have a companion in WhatsApp or Telegram than browse a library of characters. Character.AI is a common first stop for people leaving Talkie, but its own blog announced a Chapter 11 filing on 12 October 2026 with a sale pending, so read that section before moving anything there. Talkie itself publishes no price for its paid tier, and we could not find it in the US App Store on 20 October.
What Talkie is
Talkie runs in a browser at talkie-ai.com under the title "Talkie | Free AI Character Chat," with a Discover grid of character cards, a Create button and a Download App link. The footer says "Powered by MiniMax," its privacy policy names the operator as SUBSUP PTE. LTD., and the About page gives the mission as wanting "to empower everyone on earth with superintelligence to better create, learn and live." The FAQ describes the product as an app for "real-time interactions with AI-generated objects" in which users earn card rewards based on what they talk about, trade the cards for virtual currency and spend it on more rewards. Creators who build characters with the in-app tools can earn a revenue share, according to the same FAQ, with income "dependent on user transactions and payments."
What it allows
Talkie draws a harder line on adult content than most apps in this group. Its FAQ says it "strives to navigate the broad concept of NSFW content by setting clear boundaries" and that pornographic and violent content is prohibited under its terms. The community guidelines, last updated 24 January 2025, go further than the FAQ: they ban nudity, sexually explicit material, "sexually suggestive poses, gestures, or descriptions" and content with "suggestive or implicit sexual undertones." Anyone who comes to Talkie for flirtation will find the written rules are stricter than flirtation.
What it costs, and what we could not find
The terms offer two programs. "Free Use" is described as "aimed at users who cannot afford any of our subscription-fee based programs," with the company reserving the right to deny it to anyone at any time. "Talkie +" is the paid program, which "gives full access to the Services." It is billed monthly through the app store the user bought it from, renews until cancelled, and cannot be refunded for a partial month; a missed payment drops the account back to Free Use. No dollar figure appears anywhere we could read. The subscribe address returns a 404, and the FAQ says recharges are "generally non-refundable." The iPhone side is a gap too: searching the US App Store for "talkie ai" on 20 October returned Talkie Lab - AI Playground and several other products, not a Talkie chat app, and we could not find the Talkie listing the older links point to. Talkie Lab is published by SUBSUP PTE. LTD., the company Talkie's privacy policy names as the operator of the Talkie apps and website; its listing links to talkie-ai.com, and its App Store description calls it a multimodal AI playground rather than character chat. We make no claim about why the Talkie chat app isn't there, and we haven't examined Talkie Lab.
Memory and privacy
On memory, the FAQ is candid: "AI memory capacity is technically limited, causing older conversations to be 'forgotten,'" with efforts "underway to improve memory capabilities." There is no figure for how far back it reaches. The privacy policy says the service isn't intended for anyone under 14, shares website visitor data with advertising companies for targeting, and includes a clause allowing personal information to be transferred to a successor in a bankruptcy or reorganization. The footer links to Export Data and Delete Account pages.
What Talkie tells Character.AI users
Talkie keeps a page of its own for people leaving Character.AI. It says in so many words that "Talkie is a separate service," carries a note "checked October 19, 2026" about the Chapter 11 announcement, and advises: "Do not assume that an account, subscription, character, or chat history transfers between services." Its advice is to use Character.AI's official export tools first and to try a handful of characters with the same opening scene before committing. It is sensible advice, and it applies equally to every product below.
Update, 20 October 2026: Character.AI and Chapter 11
Character.AI's blog post, dated 12 October 2026, says the company "has initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to facilitate a court-supervised sale of the company." It hopes the sale "will yield an actionable proposal that will allow continued operations" and warns that "if such a bid is unavailable, however, the platform will be wound down." The company expects the process to finish "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026." For now the platform "remains up and running," subscriptions "remain active, and billing is unchanged for now," and paying subscribers are promised advance notice if paid features change. The post links to the notice of commencement it says it filed on 15 October, and points users to the app's data export and account deletion options. Nothing in it sets a shutdown date.
How the order below works
The four below are ordered on what you can read about cost without already holding an account. That is a narrow test and not a verdict on which one is best to talk to. PolyBuzz prints a membership page with prices and tiers, TooShy prints its plan prices and free limit, Nomi prints no price on its own site but does print what a downgrade does, and Character.AI asks for a sign-up on its homepage while its subscribe address returned a 403 to us today. Talkie, the subject, prints no price, so it stays unranked.

Homepage offers "10M+ Characters." Its blog (12 October 2026) announced a voluntary Chapter 11 process for a sale, with the platform up, subscriptions active and a wind-down possible if no bid arrives.
PolyBuzz comes first because its membership page loads with prices. It lists Premium and Ultimate tiers, a first-week offer at $14.9 shown against $49.8, and a yearly plan at $24.9 a month, $299 in total. Perks include "Unlimited chats," "Ad-free," "priority chat rights" and access to named models such as Permanent Memory and Passion. Its homepage calls PolyBuzz "Free, Private, and Unlimited" with "over 20 million unique Characters," and its navigation sells Coins and Opals separately from the subscription. The character count is the company's own claim and can't be checked from outside.
TooShy is second. Premium is $9.99 a month and Ultra is $24.99, both printed on the pricing page. Messages are unlimited on both, Premium includes 6 videos a month and Ultra 25, and Ultra has more photos. The free start is Telegram with 100 messages a week, where adult content reaches a threshold and stops; explicit content is open on either paid plan. WhatsApp is paid from the first message, and photo and video packs from $6.99 are optional add-ons for subscribers. Memory is built in three layers, the live exchange, recent days and weeks, and extracted facts that last longer, and it is the same on both plans. Unlike Talkie's grid there is no catalogue to browse: the cast is dozens of companions written in-house, and every conversation is one person with one companion.
Nomi is third. Its homepage promises "short, medium, and long term" memory, multiple Nomis in one-on-one or group chats, voice chats, hands-free calls, selfies and proactive messages, and says it is "free (no credit card required) to start chatting." It also says "Nomi is built on freedom of expression" and that "All chats are anonymized and no chat data is shared with 3rd party sites," which reads very differently from Talkie's rule book. There is no pricing page, so the figures come from the App Store listing by AI Glimpse Inc: Launch Plan $9.99 a month or $59.99 a year, Standard Plan $15.99 a month or $99.99 a year, rated 4.6 out of 5 from 3K ratings and 18+. The refund policy, read on 20 October, says a downgrade to free keeps one-on-one chats but turns group chats, video, voice messaging and calls read-only.
Character.AI is fourth on this test, which says nothing about its size. Its homepage on 20 October offered "Get access to 10M+ Characters" behind a sign-up with Google, Apple or email, and its subscribe address answered with a 403 to our request, so we quote no price from it today. A catalogue that large is the thing no alternative here rebuilds, and with a sale pending, exporting your own data through the app or website is worth doing now rather than later.
Our own numbers
These are production aggregates, counts only, with nothing that identifies a person or a conversation. In the 30 days to 15 October 2026, 450,678 messages moved through WhatsApp and Telegram. It measures volume, not the quality of any conversation, and says nothing about Talkie.
What the others do better than we do
Talkie and Character.AI both hand you something we can't: a wide library of characters that other people made, with a Create button for your own. Talkie adds a collectible-card loop and a creator revenue share that no companion here has. PolyBuzz claims twice Character.AI's character count on its own homepage, and Nomi lets you design a companion and put several in one scene. Talkie's written rules are also the strictest in the group, which some readers will count as a plus.
Where we fall short
TooShy has no character builder, no user-made companions and no group scenes, so there is nothing to browse and nothing to create. WhatsApp is paid from the first message, and the free start is Telegram with 100 messages a week. We don't publish a memory depth figure. TooShy exists in WhatsApp and Telegram only, so someone who uses neither has no way in. And we have no tool to bring a Talkie or Character.AI history across.
Who each one fits
If you came to Talkie for the character library and the cards, PolyBuzz is the nearest thing here and Character.AI is the biggest, with the sale caveat above. If you wanted a single companion you design and keep, Nomi is built for that. If you want one conversation in WhatsApp or Telegram with a price on the screen first, that is TooShy, with the missing builder and the paid WhatsApp door. And anyone who liked Talkie's strict rules may find the rest of this group looser than they want.
Still to be checked by hand
Some things need an account and time, so they stay open. What Talkie+ costs and includes in dollars, which only the app's own screens can say. Whether Talkie's iPhone app is available under a name we didn't search. And how a sale of Character.AI changes the product, which nobody can know before the court process ends.
How we checked the facts
Everything about Talkie comes from its own site on 20 October 2026: the homepage, the About page, the FAQ, the terms of service, the privacy policy, the community guidelines, its Character.AI-alternative page and the free-chat page. The subscribe address returned a 404. The US App Store was searched through Apple's public search and the older Talkie listing addresses we tried returned not-found. Character.AI's lines come from its homepage and its own blog post; PolyBuzz's from its homepage and membership page; Nomi's from its homepage, refund policy and App Store listing. Our own figures are from our pricing configuration and a production database count over the window named above.
None of this tells you which one is better to talk to over a month. It does tell you what each costs to find out: a card for one, a sign-up for another, and for the biggest, a sale that is still in court.
